A native of White Plains, an MSM precollege alum, and a freshman at Juilliard, drummer/pianist Julius Rodriguez has been shaped and nurtured by the musical forces of the New York area. While his talents have taken him to festivals and competitions across the country, Rodriguez is deeply woven into the fabric of New York’s complex and tight-knit jazz community. You might find him hosting a jam session at Smalls, or even headlining a show at Lincoln Center, an annual holiday tradition for the past several years where his musicianship and spirit have inspired rave reviews.

NEW MUSIC MONDAY: CATHERINE RUSSELL, JIMMY HEATH, JULIUS RODRIGUEZ & MORE
- Kevin Laskey
This Thursday, October 6th, The Jazz Gallery is proud to welcome another new, young talent to our stage for this first time—pianist and drummer Julius Rodriguez. A native of White Plains, NY, and a student in Juilliard’s jazz program, Rodriguez is one of those rare rhythm section doublers, calling to mind Jack DeJohnette. While Rodriguez spent this past summer touring with the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and backing up singer Macy Gray at the City Winery on drums, he’ll be playing piano at the Gallery this week along with a cadre of talented peers.

MEET JULIUS RODRIGUEZ
- Keyon Harrold
Julius Rodriguez is a special talent. His Musicianship is wise beyond words and his age. He has a vision fresh and far above any single genre, but well versed and still connected to the tradition of jazz masters like Herbie Hancock, Bill Evens, Wynton Kelly, and Art Tatum.
